The Catalan Table began long before there was a website.
For years, my father has been the driving force behind many of the dishes we cook and enjoy as a family. He loves cooking, experimenting with new recipes, revisiting old favourites, and patiently refining them until the result is exactly where he wants it to be.
He also happens to be an engineer, and that mindset finds its way into the kitchen. Rather than relying only on memory or intuition, he carefully writes down ingredients, quantities, timings, temperatures, techniques, and every small adjustment that makes a difference. The goal is simple: the recipes work, and the step-by-step instructions make them easy to follow.
Many of these recipes have therefore been tested over and over again. Some have evolved through years of family meals, small corrections, comparisons, and new attempts. Others are more recent discoveries that earned their place at our table. Over time, my father patiently cleaned up his notes and turned them into a growing collection of PDFs, originally written for himself and for our family.
The Catalan Table is my way of taking that family collection one step further.
As someone who also loves cooking and who, like my father, is an engineer, I saw an opportunity to use new technologies to preserve his work and make it useful to many more people. I began transforming those carefully documented recipes into a modern website: easier to browse while cooking, accessible from anywhere, and available in Catalan, Spanish, and English.
Building the site has become a project of its own: an opportunity to learn about modern coding tools, web application development, cloud technology, and translation, all in the service of something very personal. Technology is simply the means; the real purpose is to preserve, share, and continue a family tradition.
Although Catalan cooking is at the heart of our table, the collection goes well beyond it. You will find traditional recipes alongside dishes we have discovered, adapted, or simply come to love over the years. What they share is the same approach: clear instructions, carefully tested proportions, and enough detail to give you the best possible chance of reproducing the result in your own kitchen.
And this is not a finished recipe book. It is a living collection. My father continues to cook, test new ideas, and return to existing recipes whenever he believes they can be improved. As our family table evolves, so will this website.
Each recipe carries a little more than a list of ingredients and instructions. It carries the meals we have shared, the patience that went into perfecting it, and the belief that good food becomes more valuable when it is passed on.
The Catalan Table is, ultimately, a transmission of memory, flavour, curiosity, and tradition: from one generation to another, and now from our table to yours.
Enjoy your meal, and thank you for sitting at the table with us.
