Cod How to Desalt Cod

  • Dried COD - Place the dried cod in a bowl with plenty of water and leave it in the refrigerator for a minimum of 4 days and a maximum of 6. Ensure that the water completely covers the cod, and keep in mind that the cod may expand as it soaks.
  • Perform the first water change after 24 hours, keeping the bowl in the refrigerator. It is essential that the cod remains fully submerged in water at all times.
  • Carry out a second water change after another 24 hours in the refrigerator.
  • On the third day, remove it from the refrigerator, drain it well, and it will be ready to cook. There's no need to change the water again, just ensure the excess water is thoroughly drained.
  • Dried COD Flakes - Place the pieces of dried cod flakes in a bowl with plenty of water and leave them in the refrigerator for a maximum of 2 days. Make sure they are completely covered with water.
  • Since the pieces of salt cod are thinner, make the first water change after 24 hours, always keeping the bowl in the fridge. Ensure that the salt cod is always well covered with water.
  • On the second day, remove it from the fridge, drain the pieces well, and you can cook them. There is no need to change the water, just make sure to drain it well.
  • Dried shredded - Place the pieces in a bowl with plenty of water for 3-4 hours at room temperature. If preparing the night before, leave them in the fridge. Make a first water change after 1 hour, drain them well, and they will be ready to cook.
Recommendations & Tricks
  • Do not change the water during the desalting process, but it's important to completely drain the bowl every 12 hours to remove any accumulated excess salt.
  • After each draining, refill the bowl with cold water and ensure that it completely covers the cod to prevent any part from not hydrating properly.
  • For the best results, place the container in the refrigerator during the desalting period to keep the water cold and prevent the fish from degrading.
